Matthews & Matthews Architects Ltd was established by Jane and Antony Matthews, specialising in architectural conservation and adaptation of historic buildings, as well as providing general architectural services. Conservation projects include preparation of conservation plans for historic buildings, heritage studies for town centres, as well as designing and implementing the physical works required to ensure that places continue to be used, enjoyed and well cared for. Architectural projects undertaken include design of new houses and residential alterations, commercial and recreational buildings and interior fit-outs.

Our projects usually involve most of our small, close-knit team and we enjoy working closely with clients, consultant teams and contractors.   We believe successful design is based on thoughtful response to context, whether in relation to a particular site, to an urban environment or streetscape or within a heritage building.

Matthews & Matthews Architects have considerable experience in adaptive re-use of heritage buildings which incorporate new amenities either within the building or as sensitive additions. Projects include the redevelopment of the Parnell Baths, new music recording studios for Roundhead Studios, Te Aroha Domain conservation works and new facilities, conservation of the former Star of the Sea Convent in Howick, and conservation of the Pah Homestead in Hillsborough, Auckland.

Recent awards include an NZIA Auckland Architecture Award for the design of the Roundhead Recording Studio and a Dulux Colour Award for the reinstatement of the original 1950s colour scheme as part conservation and redevelopment of the Parnell Baths.
